It is interesting that the ‘melting pot’ phenomenon is considered “false” by Randolph Bourne. The Anglo Saxons (Europeans) colonized the lands of the indigenous and with that emerged a western culture that has consumed the native cultures. In the lecture, you mentioned the Anglo Saxons have contributed to the political aspect of America in that as a country we have adopted their “representative government” and “elected monarchs” to run a nation full of diverse cultures. The point of the melting pot was different culture assimilating into America, not conforming. This failure of assimilation has created struggle amongst immigrants who come to America to find freedom. It is quite sad, but also a reality.
Nana Adu-Gyamfihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16945757602262773830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2674737781391395981.post-17131564008665880582019-06-05T20:18:58.965-04:002019-06-05T20:18:58.965-04:00This comment has been removed by the author.Nana Adu-Gyamfihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16945757602262773830noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2674737781391395981.post-1783772267592906242019-06-05T18:49:09.238-04:002019-06-05T18:49:09.238-04:00I for once actually enjoyed reading your excerpt o...I for once actually enjoyed reading your excerpt on today's lecture because it is something that we all can relate to nowadays. People always spoke about how great it must be to live the American dream and how people only hope to be able to migrate to this "melting pot" and become something they only dreamed of living. I took a class a while ago that spoke about the fusion of cultures in different parts of the world and I thought it was actually a beautiful thing. If we aren't allowed to fuse ideas from others would we have come this far? Where would we be in regards of technology or treatments of diseases if it weren't for different parts of the world coming together and sharing and building off each other's ideas?Sherry's Thoughtshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04084800995805610357noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2674737781391395981.post-79408929585061408532019-01-21T21:23:33.452-05:002019-01-21T21:23:33.452-05:00There is the talk about the "Melting Pot"...There is the talk about the "Melting Pot", which is the infusion of cultural in a specific culture. The United States of America has adopted the concept of the melting pot since about the 17th century when the British first came to settle. This concept was adopted because there is this thing called inclusion and maybe the thought to strengthen loyalty.

Bourne argued against the melting pot because now there was separation and subcultures within America. Since America is the place of possibilities and dreams coming true, it is, therefore, the perfect place to make a living, a better living at that. There are some who take advantage of being in a place that allows them to make a living and even send money home to families who are in need.

Majority of my family is not in the U.S, so those who are here work and send to families back home so that they too can have something on their tables to eat.

The melting pot is good for many, yet is abused by some. I pray that it is not done away.~ Cheryl ~https://www.blogger.com/profile/12565006685477480921noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2674737781391395981.post-51138147640235767392019-01-11T21:10:55.372-05:002019-01-11T21:10:55.372-05:00I want to start off by saying that I agree that Am...I want to start off by saying that I agree that America's true genius is it's ability to incorporate diverse cultures into national cultures based on citizenship rather than ethnicity. Citizens of America should be apart of the national cultures in America. It should not matter what culture the citizens of America are. If you were born in America, then you are a citizen and you should be incorporated into the national cultures. If you were not born in the U.S, you should not be incorporated into the national cultures because if everyone was to be incorporated into the national cultures without being a legal citizen in America, then America would not be America because America would be overly crowded and their would be economic issues. However, if their was a way that all nations could be apart of the national cultures without economical issues, the nations should be apart of the national cultures.
I have mixed feelings about the immigration act, the sedition act, and the espionage act of 1917-18 because as I mentioned above, all people can not just come to America. America would be overly crowded. I also think that if the government is not harmed by any immigrants that are here, then they should not deport them because we all want a good life. Or the government should attempt to help the other countries if they are capable of doing so. I disagree with what the Anglo Saxon stands for because the government should encourage America to try to come together with all cultures instead of separating races from each other. Separating races from each other will lead to racism, unemployment, and more different issues. People coming together as a whole would make the lives of citizens in America much easier. The Anglo Saxons were a German tribe themselves, so I find it hypocritical how they want to seperate America from different races.
The Anglo Saxon is part of the reason why I disagree with Chesterton saying that the national type is not constructed from institutionalized social practices. America is defined by national types because elite Americans choose to socialize within their race and the citizens of America follow that particular way of socializing when they communicate with other people who are within or who are outside of their race. For example, Chesterton was asked if he was in favor of subverting the U.S government by force? If Chesterton was white, the authoritive figure who asked Chesterton this question would not have asked him it. People like the authoritative person who asked Chesterton this question label indivuals using stereotypes and they use the stereotypes that they label people with in how they choose to socialize with them. Therefore, how we practice socialization is how we communicate with people from different national types. Besides to underlying tone of racism, which is a topic in itself, I dont live day to day life fighting for my rights to be seen as a U.S. citizen, my right to live here, etc. I remember learning the Melting-Pot theory in a high school history art class, but to read it broken down as such was interesting. America claims to have this drawn out, wonderfully blended, equal opportunity life style, but along with that comes implications of the government since it is they who have the power.Clayton Mc.https://www.blogger.com/profile/12267822831391552583noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2674737781391395981.post-4589407753773887782019-01-04T14:44:46.230-05:002019-01-04T14:44:46.230-05:00As I wrote on My Blog I could truly relate with th...As I wrote on My Blog I could truly relate with this weeks essay. Trans-National America. I could see many of our communities experiencing some of the same challenges that the European immigrants faced during this period. As described in the essay immigrants were expected to conform to the "American" system according to those that came before them Americanizing was not a process that they wanted people to transition in their own terms but to forcibly Americanize according to the expectations of others.
As in the essay today's immigrants also maintain their national identity and bring their own cultures into the "melting pot". The expectation of the Melting pot" was that all immigrants would become that American that the WASPS expected them to become. The expectation was that they would develop a new national identity as Americans and not maintain that identity that we all come to this country with. The "fore fathers saw themselves as "natives" when in fact we are all immigrants to this country. These issues relate to issues that we face today. The U.S. entered World War I against the Germans and Austrians to force them into a Democratic society. America perceives Democracy to be the only civilized way to govern a country, using military force our government will try to implement these ideals time and time again. The war on Iraq is an example of these political agendas. America invaded Iraq because the Bush administration used scare tactics, threats of weapons of mass destruction, which were later unfounded. Many believe that the real reason was to push for democratic government because America will profit. Bourne speaks candidly about immigration issues within the American society. We are all immigrants or descendants of immigrants, I agree with the authors remarks about assimilation. Assimilation is the process by which a person acquires the social and psychological characteristics of a group. Meaning if you migrate or immigrate to America you must let go of your cultural identity and conform to the American, albeit European standard. He suggests that USA does't have an specific culture if not that it's a multicultural nation composed of millions of immigrants.I Also Charleston which talks about racial, gender and income inequality in America. This is all seen today in the United States. I believe that USA in a multicultural nation and that there's a lot of inequality involved.
